Who is afraid of entertainment? A designer’s perspective on playfulness and technology in museums

Short thesis

For the last decade, museums have been facing an identity crisis. How can they compete with other cultural offerings both online and offline? Could adopting new technologies help them stay relevant and reach new audiences? There is excitement but also a widespread concern that, in the process of reinventing themselves, they might be losing what makes a museum a museum. Entertainment is often the number one boogeyman in this story. Technology is a close second. Both point to a fear of being replaced, of becoming obsolete. What if a more playful approach to technology was part of the solution?
